In this social network analysis of members of multiple militant groups in Afghanistan. After building quantitative data sets from deep social ethnography, pattern analysis was to identify primary figures underlying group alliances. It was found that the most important figure in establishing alliances, the largest node in the network, is not ranked in the chain of command but an outsider with diverse social ties.
